Werner Klemperer (Col. Klink) was Jewish, and only agreed to do the show if 
the Nazis were portrayed as imbeciles, which was not the  original intent.

It was an extremely odd premise for a "comedy" show. I knew a couple of former 
Allied POWs of the Germans who were pretty offended by it.
