MP4 is the container format for the MPEG4 standard (specifically part
14), and is based off the QuickTime container format. It is completely
independent of MPG, which is the container format for the old MPEG and
MPEG2 standards. The reason the above works is because any properly
designed media player outright disregards the extension, and instead
reads the 'magic number' in the first couple bytes of the file to
determine what format it is in.
