Actually the 1TB drive sda1 is connected directly to the SATA
connection on the motherboard (not eSATA). I route the cable out of
the case to an eSATA connection on an external closure. Not sure if
this is a great idea but it seemed to be working well. Is it a problem
do you think? Since 9.10 I've been having issues with fragmentation on
that drive that defragmenting (xfs_fsr) doesn't seem to be able to do
much about.

Here is the output of sudo fdisk -l:

Disk /dev/sda: 1000.2 GB, 1000204886016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 121601 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

/dev/sdb6            1584       38913   299853193+  83  Linux

The reason /var/lib is so large is that I also use it for backup of
pictures & music from another pc.
