I think you're overestimating the need for updates to keep your system
secure.  If you're behind a well configured firewall, don't have
non-essential services running, don't have non-trusted users with
access to the system, and don't run general purpose computing tasks
(really treating it as an appliance), then you have a very low risk
profile and not much to worry about.

I still have a series 1 TiVo which is also running Linux but I don't
think it's received an update in the last 5 years.
