Yup.

Indeed. FWUI, they master the DVDs in violation of the DVD standards
just enough to trip up DVD-ROM drives (and software) but not enough to
trip up bona fide DVD players. If my understanding is correct, I'm not
sure why DVD-ROM drives/software can't just be more like DVD players,
but TBH, I don't really understand the details.

Yup.

The only workaround I know of (which I am not advocating) is to stop
renting/buying DVDs and obtain your material elsewhere where it's not
encumbered by this stupidity.

Sadly, this is just another case of DRM backfiring and driving people
who would otherwise legitimately obtain (likely by paying for) material
into markets where the content owners/distributors don't receive
payment.

Given that B/R is apparently rippable now (and I presume content from
such available for "download" now), I suspect that people (who would
otherwise be happy to rent/buy content) wanting to watch B/R on
non-industry "sanctioned" device are obtaining material in a manner that
results in no income for content owners. Again, not that I am
advocating such things, just posting what I suspect is happening.
