I've often wondered if the rental disks are different somehow from the ones sold at retail.

The rental stores here are going out of business one by one, between Netflix and RedBox nobody is willing to pay the 
exorbitant fees the rental stores charge, or buy the fuel for two trips to the store. There's only one left, and I 
wouldn't bet on its staying power.

Each time one goes out of business they sell off their inventory for about $1 per disk (which is more than most of them are 
really worth).

I see RedBox is now selling used disks as well as renting them for $1/day.

I suppose complaining to Netflix might be useful, if you had a problem with a disk from them, they are large enough to 
maybe get listened to by the studios.
