I realise that there is no panacea solution, however the other side of
the equation is there's currently no box that address's this need
(certainly existing PVR's don't), the design is not meant to compete
with existing consumer grade products, it's a different market. What
it is meant to do is provide a customised solution for the lowest cost
effective price.  If the people who did the brief decide the unit
isn't cost effective that's their decision to make, neither yours nor
mine, however what I want to do is put forward the best proposition
that meets the design brief for the best price possible.

As to requiring internet for updates you're wrong as a OTA update
mechanism has provisionally been made available as far as I
understand.
