Thanks for the input Mike.

I have tried toggling pulseaudio. I know that has been problematic on some systems.  It was disabled when the audio stopped playing and it is currently off.  The desktop environment is currently KDE 4.2.  Logging out of kde and starting mythtv under a simple window manager doesn't make any difference.  But again, how can everything else work while mythtv does not?
