The nvidia driver does autodetection on startup.  The TV has to be on and
the s-video cable connected when you boot the system.

Second (and more remote) possibility: improper impedance on the TV end.
I've run into this and it was horribly confusing.  The TV output on the
card detects a connection by checking for a 75 ohm load.  In my case, the
load was closer to 22K ohm, and the card would simply think that nothing
was connected.  The net result was something similar to what you're
seeing:

A brief flicker as the driver checked for a connection, and then nothing.

Try a different TV or, if you have an s-video to composite adapter, try
that to a different TV, run the s-video cable to your VCR and then to your
TV....
