Yes, I'm using the optical cable.  The problem is there is no longer a
"passthrough" option available in the audio settings.

When I select 5.1 and then check "Dolby Digital", I get loud static on
playback.  Running -v audio shows this in the log:

etc, switching ~20 times a second.  This is for a wide variety of
shows with different audio tracks.  Obviously not the preferred
configuration...
