Which is just what pulse would be doing too..
I mentioned the software mixer as an alternative to having to use pulse...

no, you are right.. Changing the volume on the pre-amp side of things
is much better.
But not everyone want to do that as seen above.

You go in the settings where you set the volume and mixer, and choose
"software" as the mixer device, that's all you have to do.
