Can you boot the system site a live CD like Knoppix? If sp, does THAT
recognize the video type?

My master BE recently went stone cold dead; hit the power button and
nothing happens. So I replaced the power supply. Now the machine boots
up, but X will not start. Xorg.0.log says there is no device found.
Also the output from lspci looks suspicious; it finds a "VGA compatible
controller" but it is identified as something like 0xbe1 instead of
"GeForce 220". So something is weird. Of course, the video output that I
am viewing in console mode goes through this same card, so I am a bit
mystified as to what is going on.

The first thing I did was try a different video card: same result. So I
can most likely rule out hardware problems with the video card. I don't
see how it could be software either, since no software changes were
made, only the power supply was replaced.

This seems to indicate some sort of hardware issue with the motherboard.
Is there any way to diagnose this? It's a real pain to replace the
motherboard, especially for someone with limited hardware skills like
me, so I don't want to do that unless I can convince myself that this is
really needed and that it will fix the issue.
