The box has a bunch of case fans - two in the front and one in the
back. It's a normal desktop PC running Gentoo and turned on all the
time but his usage model is very minimal. My dad is in his 80's and
cannot hear well. Hearing aid, etc. so he's not bothered by fan noise.
Not exactly the configuration that would be a media server sitting in
the living room! ;-)
Don't get me wrong - it's a pretty normal level of PC noise - not a
jet and not silent.
that said when I built the machine a few weeks ago I had the drive
outside the box. Even when building Gentoo from scratch, including
XFCE, Gnome and KDE - the drive never did much more than warm up to
the touch.
