Just a side comment on sticking with X11...
Multi-cores are almost everywhere these days, of course except for MY
older systems. But on my newest machine, I notice that working through
X11 can give a sort of natural division of labor between the calling
task and X11 itself. You're able to make some effective use of both
cores, and less likely to get into in a situation where one core is
nearly idle and the other core is pushing as hard as it can, and still
not fast enough.
