I still haven't seen any reason why.
It would be possible to have Myth talk directly to a frame buffer
device, but then you would lose any hardware acceleration that the X
drivers for you graphics card support. You would also lose the ability
to run many external players and applications to support mythvideo,
mythgame, and such.
Obviously you can run without a desktop manager (KDE or Gnome), and you
can run without a window manager (e.g., ratpoison, fvwm, etc.), but
doing so may present pointer focus problems with external players.
When asking a question, it's usually helpful to explain why you're
asking, so the answers can help point you in the right direction, even
if they're not what you think you're looking for.
