You're first instinct was right.  It was on a USB 1.1 port.  I did have 
it working before, but my cable box was pegged to 480i then.  When I 
removed that setting, it quit working and I didn't notice.  I probably 
tested it on a SD channel and never noticed it didn't work in HD.  I 
really don't watch that much, and my A180 records most things I do 
watch, since it is the first tuner installed.
