LVM snapshots are most certainly persistent!  I create them and boot
from them (in the case of a an upgrade that I am unhappy with for
example) all the time.

The snapshot is a complete volume backup in every sense except that it
happens instantaneously and it's space efficient and thus only consumes
as much space as is needed to track the changes made since the
"backup" (snapshot) was taken (i.e. no space at all the moment after the
snapshot is taken)
