How about creating a myth:// wrapper of some sort.  Kinda like a
framebuffer.  I don't know enough about how the myth:// protocol works, but
I would think there would be a way to link a local file to a remote myth://
served file if the right developer were involved.

I would also love to see a micro-backend that does nothing but allow the
creation of a storage group for local files.  Could even be integrated into
the frontend.
