I must try it out again thoroughly. For the nay-sayers, xbmc has its
own player and I believe it can also be configured to use an external
player.

I think, Mike, that the proof of the pudding is in the eating, and
historically there have been problems with Internal. It's human nature
that you will have people who won't believe how good Internal is until
they see it for themselves (and that involves them changing their
settings), there will also be people who hold up some obscure file and
say "see I need to shell out to wine running windows media player
patched with virus carrier addon-A to play this, I TOLD you not to
remove external player support"
