With the flex PSU's that I have, they only seem to work if the +12v line has a 
reasonable load, e.g. a hard disk. These modern motherboards pull so little 
current on their own the PSU just gives up.

I ended up getting some of those plug-top PSUs driven by an external power 
brick, which do the job excellently.
