I have encountered very few DVDs that didn't work with the dumpstream
option in mplayer. A few that failed that, were readable after applying
ddrescue.
There's a lot of disks that are just plain bad out there. There are
also others that are "intentionally broken" as a form of copy protection.
VLC works well on those since it seems to try and access the disk the same
way a console player would.
Anything that's Disney/Pixar and is not 30+ year old 2nd tier stuff is
bound to have the very latest in "intentionally broken" types of DVD copy
protection.
