Why would I want a machine powerful enough to commflag 5+ simultaneous
recordings sitting in my living room? There's a reason some of us use
headless backends - it's because we're -using- MythTV's features.

In my view, MythTV was never supposed to compete with Tivo - a much
simpler design could do that. Rather, it's a premium DVR with premium
features for power-users.

I like that I can have my DVD's stored on the NAS, or that I can setup
a user job such that 3 button presses will export a recording for my
iPod. Between the 2 permanent frontends on the TV's and frontends
running on laptops, everyone in the house can watch whatever they like
whenever they want to, and I like that too. I like that I can utilise
the often idle cores on my i5 workstation to help out with the job
queue.

TL;DR - I want MythTV to remain a highly configurable power tool.

Your use case is not mine.

As for "appliances" - my router is an "appliance". My NAS is an
"appliance". Both are configured over web interfaces, and it's fast
and easy to do so, because it gives me a mouse and keyboard. I'd like
the same to be true of MythTV.

Bring on the browser-based config tools!
