well, I spoke too soon, now no sound works at all from the hdmi port,
regardless of what app I'm using.
I tried updating the 1.0.23 alsa drivers from the ricotz ppa, no go,
then I tried compiling ALSA 1.0.23 from scratch, no go.

I need to try testing without running mythfrontend to see if it's the
same case where mythfrontend is causing none of them to work.

now this is a much bigger headache than it was before...
