Another suggestion: I used to have two separate instances of X running, 
one on each display device, each running its own instance of MFE. That 
worked quite well, especially considering that one of the output devices 
was a PVR-350. You could even have two versions of the settings file, 
which would use a different client name, thereby having separate 
settings in the database for the two instances.

If you did this, there would be no need to change display settings, 
since both displays would always be active. Granted, this approach takes 
a lot more RAM.
