I had a similiar issue for ages with an Nvidia 8800 GS HDMI and Sony
Bravia V5500. It would periodically dim then come back to normal
brightness and it was VERY annoying.

I've found the Beta NVIDIA Propriatory drivers 260.xx seemed to have
solved the issue but i think this is something to do with them not
bundling libvdpau with their drivers anymore.

Try installing the 260.xx beta drivers from NVIDIA and updating
libvdpau1/libvdpau to the latest version. This seemed to fix it for me.
