There have been several court cases about it already.

Kaleidescape had a networked DVD player, that would cache any DVD stored 
internally onto a hard drive, and stream it to remote players.  They won 
that case based off the fact that the disk was locked in the player when 
cached

RealNetworks tried to make a commercial DVD ripper, under the claims 
that the system no longer constituted effective security.  They lost.
