Just to add something to Richards comment.....

You can keep Pulse active while using myth by the following method.

export DEBUG_PULSE_AUDIO_ALSA_EMULATION=1

then start mythtvfrontend

You might wonder why you would want to keep Pulse alive, depending how
you've setup your remote control you can get the pulse volume control
to control volume for all your apps, makes life easier.
