To be honest, I am surprised it was working for you. I just put
together a new system without a serial port and purchased a
PCI->Serial adapter that uses the 2303X chipset and that did not work.
I tried with a USB->Serial adapter and it had the same chipset. I
wound up ordering a $5 serial header to bracket adapter from Newegg
and now all works fine.
The 2303X reports as pl2303. It may be possible to get this working
(and it sounds like you had it working at some point), but I do not
have the skills and it was just easier to get the bracket.
