Yes, I figured this was a case where analog channel/inputs/tuners/etc.
were at an even priority with their digital counterparts.

Indeed, I figured this was all about me telling the scheduler, one way
or another I prefer digital recordings. :-)

I recall there being a warning not so long ago about setting priorities
(on tuners perhaps) that would lead to unexpected results and that that
should be avoided. Is there something specific about priorities and
tuners that doesn't affect input, power or channel priorities?

Yeah. Channel priorities seems straightforward, although tedious.
Input priorities is an interesting all-in-one way to do it. Although I
can think of a digital channel or two I'd like to not have such priority
so maybe channel priorities is the way to go.

I did the latter, 936 == 1 and everything else == 0 now.

Indeed, it did seem to resort things there so that I got the "everything
on digital" result I was looking for:

Modern Family 40 CITY 22 21:00-21:31 1 0 0 A E -3
Modern Family 936 WWTI 22 21:00-21:31 2 3 3 A 3 -2
Criminal Minds - "The Longest Nigh 39 CJOH 22 21:00-22:00 2 0 0 A E -2
Shattered - "Don't Wanna Die" 42 SHCASEC 22 21:00-22:00 1 0 0 A E -2
Criminal Minds - "The Longest Nigh 77 WWNY 22 21:00-22:00 2 1 1 A 1 -2
Cougar Town - "All Mixed Up" 40 CITY 22 21:31-22:00 1 0 0 A E -3
Cougar Town - "All Mixed Up" 936 WWTI 22 21:31-22:00 2 3 3 A 3 -2

Yay!

It did however have an interesting side effect elsewhere at 8pm the same
night:

The Middle - "Back to School" 936 WWTI 22 20:00-20:30 2 3 3 A 3 -2
Survivor: Nicaragua 3 CIII 22 20:00-21:00 1 5 5 A 5 -2
Undercovers - "Pilot" 40 CITY 22 20:00-21:00 1 0 0 A E -3
Undercovers - "Pilot" 11 WGRZ 22 20:00-21:00 2 1 1 A 1 -3
Survivor: Nicaragua 7 WWNY 22 20:00-21:00 1 4 4 A 4 -2
Better With You - "Pilot" 936 WWTI 22 20:30-21:00 2 3 3 A 3 -2

Survivor there is recording twice because there is no episode number for
it yet in the guide, just it's generic *0000 one. Fair enough. But "77
WWNY" (the digital version of "7 WWNY") shares a multiplex with "936
WWTI", so it has the same problem where "7 WWNY" just won the
"everything being equal toss-up" between it and it's digital version.
Bumping up the priority of "77 WWNY" resolved that one as well:

The Middle - "Back to School" 936 WWTI 22 20:00-20:30 2 2 2 A 2 -2
Survivor: Nicaragua 3 CIII 22 20:00-21:00 1 4 4 A 4 -2
Undercovers - "Pilot" 40 CITY 22 20:00-21:00 1 0 0 A E -3
Undercovers - "Pilot" 11 WGRZ 22 20:00-21:00 2 3 3 A 3 -3
Survivor: Nicaragua 77 WWNY 22 20:00-21:00 2 1 1 A 1 -1
Better With You - "Pilot" 936 WWTI 22 20:30-21:00 2 2 2 A 2 -2

I guess I will go through and do some channel priority bumping to prefer
the digital broadcasts. I knew this was a priority problem, I just
wasn't sure where I should (and shouldn't) fiddle to make it work. It
seems the advise in the past was that one should simply add the inputs
in the order that one wants to prioritize and not fiddle with anything
else. I guess that only goes so far.

Thanx bunches!
