I wish everyone would quite associating this crack with Blu-Ray (and
whatever media formats you want) as it really has nothing at all to do
with them except that Blu-Ray (etc.) players use HDMI to display their
*output* to a display device.

The key that was cracked/leaked has got nothing to do with Blu-Ray
decryping and entirely everything to do with the HDMI connection from a
Blu-Ray (or any other device for that matter) to the display device.

This key does not really have a terrible amount of practical use in
terms of putting your Blu-Ray content onto your computer since what you
are getting as a result of this key is completely raw, unencrypted
video. That means up to 1920x1080x(24 usually, but could be 60)*
$color_depth where $color_depth might be what, 12 (as a guess -- surely
somebody here knows)? That's a lot of data to have to accept in
real-time and either store or encode.

Given tools like DVDFab and whatnot, it seems that the on-disc
encryption is a much more likely attack vector.

Now, what this key will provide is a market for (cheap, since licensing
costs go away) "plays anywhere/anything" Blu-Ray players that can
display to any device, even older, non-HDCP compliant devices. It will
also enable the production of "HDCP strippers" to give back to the
consumer control over what devices he wants to hook up to what devices.
