Ah, I only use 1080 modes and use the "any" modeswitch to match refresh rates not resolutions, sorry looks like I didn't read your post thoroughly enough.

Some time ago JYA posted a summary of how the auto mode selection code he wrote works, if you can find that in the list archive it may help narrow the problem down.
