Oh, I jumped to that conclusion based on some comments by Robert M on
the mailing list.  I may be completely wrong.

That sounds hard! :(  I didn't realise cat hit the EOF if the file is
still being written (although I didn't expect it from ffmpeg either).
I know the commflagger can process an inprogress recording, so I
wonder if other mythtools (i.e. mythtranscode) is aware of in progress
recordings and handles the stream accordingly.  Or maybe using the
python bindings or mythXML will utilise any inbuilt ability of mythTV
to stream a file of an inprogress recording?

Bugger, maybe this isn't the 30 minute hack I thought it might be :P
