Are you sure you have X properly configured ( 
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Display_Size -- see, especially, 
http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Display_Size#Checking_your_Configuration ) 
and that you have not specified a "Video aspect override" in MythTV 
frontend TV Playback settings or a "Monitor aspect ratio" in MythTV 
frontend Appearance settings?
