[mythtv-users] What can be controlled through a system event perl script?

Firstly, I'm using Mythbuntu 10.04 with Mythtv 0.23.1 (latest 0.23 release)
I'm using find-zero-byte.pl with Gavin's "HDPVR killer device". This perl script is called from the RecordingStarted system event.
Today my hdpvr locked up and the find-zero-byte.pl script worked in the sense that it reset the pdpvr by power cycling it. The script also returned a '1' to the caller BUT even though the hdpvr recovered, myth continued to "record" to a zero byte file for the rest of that recording schedule.
This seems suboptimal to me (not Gavin's work, just my expectations of what I'd like it to do), I'd like for this event handler to be able to interact with mythtv a little more. I've searched through the mythtv wiki, this list and everything else that google could find but nothing answered my questions.
I would like to be able to tell Myth to abort this current recording, and either reschedule the recording for later or even better, continue THIS recording after resetting the HDPVR (usually this is all done within the first 30 seconds of the recording start, still plenty of program to watch). I do know this isn't easily done though (from reading this list).
Perl bindings? Python bindings? return code? other? experiences? insights?
