    I think a key difference with the approach that MythTV takes is the
fact that you aren't hung up waiting for the scheduler while it does it's
thing. While the scheduling process can be rather intensive just by the
nature of what it's doing, it can do this in the background while the
frontend or the backend is doing something else.

    This is a key advantage of Unix in general. You can fully utilize a
machine and end user processes will still be responsive.

    And yes, the fact that we can control what hardware the backend is
running on is an extra advantage when compared to a Tivo. It's trivial
to add extra storage or even RAM to a Myth box when compared to a Tivo.
 
    PCs are more easily modified by design, plus you can set up your
own system so that it handles upgrades more gracefully.
