actually, since you have limited Linux experience (not a dig, i still
consider myself a novice), and you really are only interested in
MythTv, i'd highly recommend checking out the Myth specific distros:

these are much more appliance like.  the devs/packagers do a great job
of making these packages install the OS and a default MythTv install
all in one.  you still have a full Linux system to tweak/play with,
but it gets you up and running much more quickly than doing it all
yourself.

i recommend LinHes.  if you are actually looking to 'learn' Linux,
then you may want to look at one of the distros based on RedHat or
Ubuntu.
