I killed and restarted mythbackend (not for the first time, but the
first time with these verbosity options). I fired up mythfrontend,
and....

Poof! It worked. This time the frontend log shows:

As it happens, there was another frontend (not yet upgraded) running,
but I didn't stop that frontend before I tried this one. Maybe this is
some kind of timing thing based on which of the front ends connects
first?

Next time I will make sure that all frontends are killed before I
restart the backend. Thanks to everyone for their help. If I can provide
any information to help debug this given that my system no longer has
the problem, I will be happy to do so.
