I believe the firmware version loaded is the one the driver requests, there is no way to control this beyond using the different driver.
[ 8.790369] nGene PCIE bridge driver, Copyright (C) 2005-2007 Micronas
[ 8.795102] ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [APC8] enabled at IRQ 16
[ 8.795110] ngene 0000:04:00.0: PCI INT A -> Link[APC8] -> GSI 16 (level, low) -> IRQ 16
[ 8.796795] ngene: Found Mystique SaTiX-S2 Dual (v2)
[ 8.801791] ngene 0000:04:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[ 8.801928] ngene: Device version 1
[ 8.801951] ngene 0000:04:00.0: firmware: requesting ngene_18.fw
[ 8.881812] ngene: Loading firmware file ngene_18.fw.
If your system is loading ngene_15.fw then I suspect you are not actually using the new driver!
H'mm the page I linked to doesn't mention depmod, maybe it's done in make install but maybe not.
Perhaps you need:
sudo depmod -a
to ensure the newly compiled driver is used.
