Could you simply swap it round and make your Atom the master backend 
and have it start up the 'big' machine as required ?

Also, on the subject of efficiency, before doing that it might be 
worth measuring the actual power consumption in the appropriate mode 
since the PSU will still be on to run the LAN & WOL bits - though 
hopefully that standby power is provided by a separate small and 
efficient supply.
