Don't really have any answers or suggestions for you, but I can tell
you that I am one of people that previously posted on this issue and I
am still basically in the same boat as you are.  As far as I know
there is no fix for the current kernel.  So, I don't think you are
necessarily missing anything.  If you can possibly drop back two
kernel levels (2.6.35.9-64) I think you will find things will work
better as long as you have the 'echo' command in your rc.local.  My
understanding, which may or may not be correct, is that there is
another kernel in testing (Rawhide) that addresses this issue.  I'm
hoping this is the case and that the kernel gets released soon.
