Thanks Bill and Mike. I'll have a go using MYTHCONFDIR.

*Very* occasionally, I sometimes used to run *three* mythfrontends on 
same PC and same logged in user! One was playing a (usually audio-only) 
program, and two housekeeping - one looking in upcoming recordings and 
comparing with currently recorded or previously recorded stuff. It was 
useful being able to quickly alt-tab between the last two sessions. I 
can see that I would have to have a third configuration directory if I 
wanted to do that.

Given that I don't use UPNP, is it not possible to simply disable it, or 
disable the Media Renderer bit, on the frontend? Then I could use one 
config file for all the frontends without worrying about clashes.
