Having had some issues updating to the new base layout, I think the 
problem might be in the script that you/ppp are using to bounce the 
interface.  In my case the script update didn't take properly and it 
caused some issues. The /init.d/net.ethx entries and /etc/conf.d/net 
were not converted/configured properly. I would verify that these files 
were configured/converted properly and that the script used by ppoe is 
referencing the right network interface and not the base interface 
that's linked to by the net.ethx soft links.
