If you want to use the features already there, try:

TV Settings -> playback -> Recording groups (5/8)
You can set the default group filter to "Children's Programming" and 
deselect "save current group filter when changed"

Set like this, the frontend will always fail-safe to Children's programming. However it does mean to get to other recording groups you need to go through the required button presses on the remote.  And by definition its not sticky. If you want to be really crack down on the children's viewing you can also password protect the other recording profiles.
SO this is a good solution where you want to use the code/packages as they are, and its mainly for the children.
