The quote from amazon is:
Compatible With: Windows Media Center (for use with encrypted or copy
controlled content), Other Popular DVR Programs (for use with copy
freely content)
Windows Media Center can access copy controlled content with the device,
while other DVR software that support the library can access copy freely
content. Encryption does not factor into this anywhere. The cablecard
is used for decryption, but unencrypted content can be marked for copy
protection just as well.
