[mythtv-users] OtherOS: Linux on PS3 with direct hardware access

Nope. I dont see it happening.

The PS3 is based on the Cell Broadband Engine which has really only
found a niche use is a few products. Its architecture is completely
different from anything else and by modern x86 cpu standards isnt
actually that quick.

The graphics chip in the PS3 is based on the Nvidia GeForce 7800
Architecture which doesnt support VDPAU (which was introduced in the
8x00 series). So all decoding would need to be in software and all the
software would need to be re-written for the CBE; which as its
architecture is sooo different from x86 is not trivial...

This conversation comes up recurrently when a "breakthrough" is
announced, but seriously the PS3 is a dead end from a software
developers point of view for a frontend as the PS3 is coming to the
end of its life and it is still more expensive than a dualcore
Atom/ION2 system which is more capable due to VDPAU
