I've seen pauses and attributed them to external (background)
activities interrupting the playback on my frontend.  I've not looked
into it particularly but noticed the problem got worse when copying
files using sftp in the background.  The pauses though can be quite
periodic, about once every few minutes.

I have no other baseline to compare against unfortunately.
