You're making the assumption that the majority of people want to see
the programs after the sports, instead of the sports themselves, or
that a significant number of people (where significant is defined by
the networks) use a DVR that is locked into recording a program at a
specific time slot.  Plus, why pick on CBS?  All networks that have
any sports programs do this.  Football goes into overtime, baseball
into extra innings, auto races have rain delays or multiple caution
periods.
