I think it is just a normal mode of operation. My Panasonic TV has the
same behavior. It is hooked to an Nvidia 8400 through HDMI. The mythtv
menus provide no change? in signal so the TV first blanks and then
powers itself off.

I often use mplayer in a terminal to pull radio from a separate system
or an Internet feed. I have to use either mythgallery or live tv to keep
the TV from shutting off and consequently turning off the speakers. The
good news is that once the audio is coming from mplayer, mythtv's audio
is muted.
