[mythtv-users] IR keyboard, learning remotes?

I recall from past threads that some have (still do?) use IR keyboards
and learning remotes as an alternative to lirc.  The mailing list
archives on this topic that I've found are a few years old and reference
now discontinued keyboards.  Is lirc the only current option or is
anyone using something like this with currently available components? 
If so, what are your recommendations?
