I recall having a drift problem a long time ago. I'm using the HD-PVR with a
DirecTV H20 component + SPDIF. I think I fixed it by using a different
firmware and possibly a different SPDIF cable. In my setup, I know things do
not work well if the cable is not seated well on both ends.

I'm not sure I saw what version of the firmware you are using. I'm using the
1.5.7.0 version that is on the hauppauge site. In the kernel log it shows as

[ 3.909924] hdpvr 1-2:1.0: firmware version 0x15 dated Jun 17 2010 09:26:53

if you are running a older kernel that does not print the date, use the
strings command on the .ROM file that is in the driver zip to see the date.

There are some older HD-PVR drivers here
http://www.shspvr.com/ftp/download/wintv-hdpvr . A couple of those are beta,
so YMMV. Some are WHQL, so those should be stable. Just remember to do
HWCLEAR when switching between them.
